Zoho Marketing Automation vs ActiveCampaign: Which Fits Your Funnel?
Both tools build journeys and score leads. The difference that actually decides the purchase is where your customer record lives — and whether you want the marketing tool to own a second copy of it.
Related service: Zoho Marketing Automation →ActiveCampaign is a good product. That is worth saying up front, because comparisons written by partners usually are not honest about the competition. It has one of the more mature automation builders on the market, a large integration library, and a light CRM with deal pipelines bundled into its mid tiers. Teams that buy it rarely complain about the software itself.
What they complain about is the bill at renewal, and the fact that they now maintain two systems of record. That is the fault line this comparison runs along. Feature checklists will not settle it — both tools send email, build journeys, score leads and report on them. The question is architectural.
The structural difference in one paragraph
ActiveCampaign is designed to be the centre of your customer data. It holds contacts, it can hold deals, and everything else syncs into it. Zoho Marketing Automation is designed to be a marketing layer over a CRM you already run — leads, scores and journey events move back and forth with Zoho CRM natively, and the CRM stays the record of truth. If you have no CRM, ActiveCampaign's approach is genuinely convenient. If you already run Zoho CRM, it means paying for a second contact database and then paying, in engineering time, to keep the two in agreement.
What each one costs in 2026
| Zoho Marketing Automation | ActiveCampaign | |
|---|---|---|
| Billing unit | Contact tier, starting around 500–1,000 contacts | Contact tier, starting at 1,000 contacts |
| Entry paid tier | Standard, roughly $14–$19/month at the entry contact tier | Starter, around $15/month annually ($19 monthly) at 1,000 contacts |
| Mid tier | Professional, roughly $22–$29/month at the entry tier | Plus, around $49/month annually ($59 monthly) at 1,000 contacts |
| Top standard tier | Enterprise, roughly $44–$59/month at the entry tier | Pro around $79/month; Enterprise around $145/month, annually at 1,000 contacts |
| At 10,000 contacts | Scales by contact tier — price it on Zoho's calculator | Roughly $149 (Starter) to $589 (Enterprise) per month, billed annually |
| Native Zoho CRM sync | Built in, two-way | Via integration or middleware |
Both vendors reprice regularly and both scale by contact tier, so treat these as orientation rather than a quote. Verify current pricing on Zoho's and ActiveCampaign's official sites before you budget, and remember that Indian invoices add 18% GST.
Two details in that table matter more than the headline numbers. First, ActiveCampaign's Starter plan caps each automation at five actions — which sounds academic until you build your first real nurture flow and hit the ceiling in week two. Most teams that buy Starter end up on Plus. Second, ActiveCampaign's cost climbs steeply with contact count, and marketing databases only grow. Model your list at the size it will be in two years, not today.
Where ActiveCampaign is genuinely better
- The automation builder is more polished and more forgiving — branching, goals and conditional waits are easier to reason about, and the visual editor handles complex flows without becoming unreadable
- The integration library is much larger, particularly for ecommerce stacks; deep Shopify and WooCommerce behaviour is well trodden ground
- If you have no CRM and no intention of buying one, the bundled deal pipelines are a real saving
- Deliverability tooling and reputation management are mature, which matters if email volume is your primary channel
If you are a direct-to-consumer ecommerce business whose marketing is email-led and whose data lives in Shopify, ActiveCampaign is a defensible choice and we would not argue hard against it.
Where Zoho Marketing Automation wins
The case is narrower but stronger where it applies: B2B funnels where a salesperson eventually picks up the phone.
- Lead scores computed from marketing behaviour land on the CRM lead record itself, so sales sees the score in the system they already work in rather than in a marketing tool they never open
- Journeys can branch on CRM data — deal stage, owner, territory, industry — without exporting or syncing it first
- Lead source and campaign attribution survive all the way to closed-won, because the lead never leaves the ecosystem
- The marketing planner tracks campaign budget and spend against outcomes, which is unusual at this price point
- Web forms, pop-ups, landing pages and social lead ads all write directly into the same lead pool
That third point is the one finance teams care about. The most common reporting failure we see is a marketing tool that can prove it generated 400 MQLs and a CRM that can prove ₹40 lakh closed, with nothing credible connecting the two. Keeping the record in one place removes the reconciliation argument entirely.
The migration question nobody asks early enough
If you are already on ActiveCampaign, switching is not free. Automations do not port — they have to be rebuilt by hand, and the rebuild is a good opportunity to delete the half of them that no longer run. Contact data and tags migrate reasonably well. Email templates usually need rework. Budget a few weeks of parallel running rather than a weekend cutover, and keep the old account alive until a full cycle has run on the new one.
The honest trigger for switching is not a feature gap. It is either the renewal quote becoming hard to justify, or the sync between the marketing tool and the CRM breaking often enough that someone is manually fixing records.
How to decide
Ask one question: is your CRM the system of record, and is it Zoho? If yes, Zoho Marketing Automation is almost always the cheaper and simpler answer, and the attribution you get is not something you can easily buy back later. If you have no CRM, or your CRM is something else and you are happy with it, ActiveCampaign deserves a serious look — and the bundled pipelines may cover a gap you would otherwise pay to fill.
As a certified Zoho partner we do a fair number of these evaluations, including ones that end with us telling a client to stay where they are. If you want your own numbers run against both — your contact count, your list growth rate, your actual journey complexity — that is a short conversation rather than a project.
Frequently asked questions
Does ActiveCampaign integrate with Zoho CRM?
There are integrations available, and for simple contact syncing they work. What they do not give you is scores and journey events written natively onto CRM records, or journeys that branch on CRM fields without a sync delay. If the integration is doing heavy lifting in your setup, you are paying twice for one customer record.
Is Zoho Marketing Automation included in Zoho One?
Marketing Automation is part of the Zoho One bundle, though bundled editions and contact allowances can differ from the standalone plans. If your list is large, check the contact limits that come with the bundle against your actual list size on Zoho's official site before assuming Zoho One covers it.
Which is better for a small B2B team of five?
If that team already runs Zoho CRM, Zoho Marketing Automation — the entry tiers are cheaper and the lead handoff is free. If they run no CRM at all, ActiveCampaign Plus gives you automation and deal pipelines in one purchase, which can be simpler than buying two products. The answer changes the moment a CRM enters the picture.
